¿Miss me?

It's been a busy couple of weeks and time is flying by.  I'll fill ya in cause I know you've been missing it.
First of all about my ministry: I am helping with a group in Los Guidos. It is a youth group for kids ages 12-17. My first time there we played games and Wii and had a short lesson. The second time we watched a movie called Home. Such a good movie, 10 out of 10, would definitely recommend. Then this Saturday we went in the morning to help. We worked with the kids to paint the building where we all meet, we had lunch, and all sat to talk and pray. Please be praying for that ministry and the kids we are working with. Please pray for me that I will be able to pick Spanish up and that I will be bold with what I know so that I can get to know the kids better.

I am also involved with a teaching English ministry. We will be offering classes on Sundays at our church a couple hours before church. It is free to everyone and we just offer an invite to the students to come to church after. I'll be teaching the advanced class since my Spanish is not advanced and hopefully their English is. Also be praying for that ministry; that our classes will be full and that we will be great examples for the students.

So going back in time life has been packed with interesting events. For example a group of five of us took the bus into San Jose to go shopping. We had all been there before but we definitely spent some time looking like a lost, wild, pack of gringos. (In case that was not previously explained that is the name given to white people/ Americans here). But we did find our way around, Lydia and I went to a cute café, did some shopping and found the right bus to get us home.

Then Tuesday the 15th was Costa Rica's independence day. We had the day off school and were given the opportunity to go to downtown Guadalupe to watch the parades. Bands and students from all the local schools perform in the parade. Costa Ricans seem to love their drums.

On Thursday our Spanish class took a field trip to Coranado. We had a scavenger hunt in town for different places. The goal was to ask Ticos for directions to practice Spanish and hear directions given in Spanish. Our group went into the municipality building. There we found a man that could speak some English, was the "accountant" for the town and had been the mayor previously for 8 years. He showed us around the building and the took us into the current mayors office. We met the mayor and his father and took a group picture together. So this is a guess but I think our group all got a 100 for the day.

Sunday the 20th a big group of us all went to a national basketball tournament; Costa Rica vs Panama. Costa Rica lost... by a lot but it was still a great time. We were told the gringos made it on tv. We had a couple of animals with us and we also got a picture with a soccer player.

Then the next day, last Monday, we  went to the beach!! There was almost no one else there. The water was almost too warm, the beach was black sand, and there were monkeys. We were there about 5 hours, swam, played games, went adventuring, and I did not get a sunburn.

From Tuesday to Friday we have 4 hours of Spanish class and 2 hours of bible class. After class most of us just hang out, do homework, and sleep.

Friday night a group of us all went out to the symphony. We all got dressed up and got to experience a fancier side of Costa Rica. The theater was beautiful. My friend Helen would be very proud of me; I went to a symphony and I did not fall asleep. But the honest highlight of the night is somewhere between the best piece of cake/truffle I have ever had and the drunk people that were singing on the bus on the way home. Just keeping things interesting.

So I am good. Definitely settling in here to my life. Prayers are appreciated. Thank you again to everyone who supported me to get here and thank you to everyone that reads this... or at least looks at the pictures. ♡♡♡

Without borders,
- Rachel Martha

I never would have guessed...

Dear Friends and Family, Many of you may know and some   may not so here it is... drum roll please... I am headed back to Costa Rica, and this time it is for two years! This past February, I visited Costa Rica to recruit GAP students for Lancaster Bible College. While I was there I heard about their need for a new Female Student Life Coordinator. I never anticipated this position being available at a time when I would be in a position to take it. While I was in Costa Rica with LBC I was able to speak with the directors of the program who offered me the position. After I returned home I had a lot of praying to do. I took about two weeks to pray and seek good counsel. After considering my options and seeking Godly wisdom I called the director in Costa Rica and officially accepted the position. In this position my primary responsibility will be to build relationships with and disciple the GAP students in the program. We hope to have 20-25 college age st...

Dream Job

Pc: Abby Shaw Hello everyone! It has been a little over a month since I arrived in Costa Rica to serve as the Female Student Life Director for the GAP program. In some ways being here is still surprising because I never imagined I would have the chance to come live here again. In other ways, living in Costa Rica and in the Villa feels absolutely natural; it feels like I am home. In many ways this is my dream job. Starting from 10th grade when I first traveled to Costa Rica I knew I wanted to spend my life traveling and mentoring students. I had no idea what that would look like or that I would end up in Costa Rica. Then not only am I working at GAP, but, I am also continuing to work for Lancaster Bible College as their International Admissions Counselor. God has been so generous.  Our Leadership Team GAP Students 2018-2019 Pictured above is this year's GAP class. The students have been here for three weeks. In those three weeks they have begun...
