Um I lost my voice...

So some may describe me as obnoxious, I would say enthusiastic. However, as I have been telling everyone here, my voice must have missed the connecting flight between Atlanta and Costa Rica. God certainly does test people and I am trying to find the right answer here. I started feeling a little sick before leaving home but I ignored it. Now I have a cold that is reducing my voice to a small squeak or whisper. Sounds like I've been chain smoking since I was about five. I swear fellow GAP students this is not my normal. But I am already learning to better sit back and listen and even though I am learning from this experience I would ask that everyone would be praying that I would start feeling better and that I could get my voice back!
Now for our trip udate: Our flight was great, and we had almost no delays and actually got to CR a little early. Because Lydia is on crutches we also had a wheelchair and airport staff to help us every part of the trip! Praise Jesus!
Also Lydia is good to ditch her crutches tomorrow and just wear her boot.
So the GAP cordinator and an intern picked up four of us at the airport and we had our first drive through town to the Villa. It was about 9pm here, 11pm in NY. We desperately wanted to eat, take showers, and sleep simultaneously but we also wanted to meet the other 25 GAP students that were already here. So we did what we could and headed to bed. Today was our first full day, Wednesday August 26th. We started the day with breakfast, then we had a group meeting to go over house rules, and then... we spent some time learning self-defense. So parents, family, friends, let it be known, our first day in CR was spent learning how to defend ourselves. Then we went out to explore a little to walk around town and tonight we had a bonfire. Already I have loved taking time first to learn each others names and then working to get to know each other. A lot of the time our first questions to each are where are you from and how did you find out about the program. I am enjoying meeting these guys and starting to really connect with them.
For me though it still doesn't seem real or permanent. I'm wondering when it's going to hit me that I'm not going home in 10 days like I have for all of my other trips but that it will be four months and then another four months.
Spanish and bible classes will start next week and by Saturday we will know what ministry or ministries we will be involved in.
Just so you know our wifi is limited so some things might be written and posted late and I might not be able to post often. But I enjoy sharing my story so thanks for reading! Prayers are greatly appreciated for our entire GAP team and for myself! Updates to come.
Love has no borders,
- Rachel Martha

Saying Goodbye Too Soon

He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end. Ecclesiastes 3:11 Hello Family and Friends, I imagine that anyone reading this is also in the midst of a crazy season, but I wanted to update you on what life looks like right now. As of Monday we made the decision to go home. We were hoping to wait it out, but on Monday the news came that Costa Rica was declaring a state of emergency and closing their borders to all incoming travelers. This has effected us in two ways: 1. We were no longer able to do our border run to Nicaragua or Panama since we would not be able to re-enter the country. 2. There is no way to know if airlines will continue to fly flights out of Costa Rica if no flights are coming in. So with that information the decision was made to send both students and staff home rather than risk being stuck in Costa Rica. Though Costa Rica is...

Costa Rica Life Update

Hello! It has been a while since I have written an update! So here is a brief overview of the past few months of life here in Costa Rica! October - I taught a 12 hour class on apologetics with a focus on the purpose and application of the practice for believers. We went to Nicaragua to renew our passports and we were able to stay in Santa Rosa with a couple of SCORE missionary families. While we were there we went to La Fortuna which is the town next to the Arenal Volcano and spent one day at the hot springs. I also had the opportunity to visit one of our other ministry sites and stay with the host family in Turrialba. We had our annual fall fest and as always we like to make things into a competition. This year students made music videos and competed in some other games. Through the month we had three other classes: Applied Hermeneutics, Will of God, and Doctrine of Salvation. November - My ministry group was able to use money that was donated by Three Pines Community Church to...

Counting Every Blessing

Group Photo at Laodicea Hey Hey Hey! It has been a while since I have written an update like this. Life has changed a lot over the past several months. I have sat down to write an update several times, but I have not been fully sure of what I wanted to write. The last time I wrote an update was about a year ago when the decision had been made to leave Costa Rica early at the beginning of the pandemic. It seems unreal that it has been a year. Though there are many difficulties I could list from my own experiences this year, there are also many blessings. So this update is coming at you in the form of a list of blessings:  1. After returning home from Costa Rica I found a job that I was able to work from April to August. I know that many people lost jobs through that time and I was grateful I was able to at least work part-time. 2. Over the summer I was able to travel and visit friends I had not been able to see in a very long time. 3. In August I started my job as a resident ...
